Metacarpophalangeal joint of the thumb
Gamekeeper's thumb also known as skier's thumb or UCL tear is a type of injury to the ulnar collateral ligament UCL of the thumb. It also occurs among people who sustain a fall onto an outstretched hand while holding a rod, frequently skiers grasping ski poles. Symptoms of gamekeeper's thumb are instability of the MCP joint of the thumb, accompanied by pain and weakness of the pinch grasp. The severity of the symptoms is related to the extent of the initial tear of the UCL in the case of skier's thumb , or how long the injury has been allowed to progress in the case of gamekeeper's thumb. Characteristic signs include pain, swelling, and ecchymosis around the thenar eminence , and especially over the MCP joint of the thumb.

Post-traumatic instability of the metacarpophalangeal joint of the thumb
Hyperextension of the middle joint of the thumb beyond a neutral position may result in a painful and unstable joint, decreased power, and difficulty in grasping large objects. Use on thumbs that can actively abduct; do not use on thumbs that are adducted. A bracelet is available to secure this splint on the thumb and can be worn multiple ways. Try crisscrossing bracelet to secure bracelet better around the wrist. The bend will allow for better function and support.

What Are the Causes of Metacarpophalangeal Joint Pain?
Thumb arthritis occurs when the cartilage in the carpometacarpal CMC joint wears away. Thumb arthritis is common with aging and occurs when cartilage wears away from the ends of the bones that form the joint at the base of your thumb — also known as the carpometacarpal CMC joint. Thumb arthritis can cause severe pain, swelling, and decreased strength and range of motion, making it difficult to do simple tasks, such as turning doorknobs and opening jars. Treatment generally involves a combination of medication and splints. Severe thumb arthritis might require surgery.

The metacarpophalangeal joint, or MCP joint, is one of five joints in each hand that connect the metacarpal bones in the palm to the phalangeal bones in the five fingers. These joints are the large knuckles visible when the hand is clenched in a fist. With the exception of the MCP joint at the thumb, the joint at each finger is considered a condyloid joint. A condyloid is a synovial or movable joint characterized by its oval joint cavity and the movements it allows: flexion , extension, adduction, abduction, and circumduction.
